Specialties

Trainees will cover the following areas in their chosen specialty.  It is normally not possible to transfer from one specialty to another during the course. The following Specialties are currently offered at the Institute.  Specific customer requirements can also be incorporated if sufficient information is provided pre-course.

 

1.   Mechanical Equipment Maintenance Technician:


This Specialty covers the basic maintenance requirements for mechanical equipment common to Power Plants and Water Desalinization Plants. It will focus on the following topics:

·        Understanding the concepts of mechanical laws.

·        Using mechanical instruments and tools.

·        Applying safety techniques and procedures while workingin an industrial environment.

·        Equipment documentation

·        Understanding equipment drawings and parts lists

·        Specification of basic components such as pipes, flanges,bolts, gaskets, o-rings, oil seal bearings etc

·        Checking the components in the field with related documents

·        Safe use of hand and power tools

·        Understanding alignment

·        Understanding vibration

·        Identifying and maintaining valve types

·        Trouble shooting

·        Mechanical and workshop safety

·        Schematic diagram analysis

·        Principles of welding and fabrication

 

2.   Electrical Equipment Maintenance Technician:


This Specialty covers the basic electrical maintenance requirements of a Power or Water Desalinization Plant. It will focus on the following topics:

·        Understanding the concepts of electrical laws.

·        Using electrical instruments and tools.

·        Understanding the principles and conventions of electrical drawing practice.

·        Applying safety techniques and procedures while working in an industrial environment.

·        Equipment documentation

·        Tracing the single line diagram to wire numbers in afield

·        Isolating electrical components

·        Testing components

·        Safe use of electrical testing equipment

·        Fault identification

·        Troubleshooting

·        Schematic diagram reading and interpretation

·        Equipment familiarization

·        Electrical safety

 

3.   Basic Instrument and Control  Technician:


This Specialty covers the understanding and use of the many and varied instruments and control systems used in Power and Water Desalinization Plants.  It will focus on the following topics:

·        Basic components of any Instrument eg sensing,transmission, conversion, display, recording

·        Reading and interpreting  loop diagrams

·        Specification of basic components such as temperature,pressure, level, flow, and measurement

·        Checking the components in the field with appropriate documentation

·        Understanding lab calibration devices for instruments

·        Learning field calibration techniques

·        Fault tracing

·        Actuator valve calibration

·        PLC basics

·        Troubleshooting

·        Instrumentation safety

4.    Power Plant Basic Operator:


This Specialty covers the methods and systems employed in the basic operations of a Power Plant.  It will focus on the following topics:

·        Basic electrical concepts

·        Basic thermodynamics

·        Basic process control systems

·        PLC basics

·        DCS basics

·        CCR operation using simulators

·        BTG operation basics

·        Logic controls

·        Electrical safety and protection

·        Fluids and pneumatic

·        Conventional heat generation operation

·        Operational chemistry

 

5.    Water Desalinisation Plant Basic Operator:


This Specialty covers the methods and systems employed in the basic operations of a Water Desalinization Plant.  It will focus on the following topics:

·        Basic water chemistry

·        Basic thermodynamics (for MSF plant operators)

·        Basic process control systems

·        Pump technology

·        Fluid dynamics

·        DCS handling

·        PLC basics

·        Logic control

·        Using simulators

·        Operational chemistry

·        Teat and measurements

·        Appropriate Health and Safety practices

 

6.    Basic Welding Technician Specialty:


This is a generic Specialty with different applications in different fields though it is particularly applicable to the Mechanical Equipment Maintenance Specialty.  It will cover the following topics:

 

·        Basic metallurgy

·        Basic principles of fitting

·        Basic soldering types such as non-metal, gas, Arc, TIG,MIG, SMAW

·        Safety practices for using inert gas in welding, flow rate vs Arc current and metal thickness

·        Knowledge of welding equipment, AC transformer, Static Invertors, and DC generators

·        Surface preparation

·        Reasons for weld failures

·        Various non destructive weld testing methods

·        Welding gear – use and safety precautions

·        NDT

·        Appropriate safety practices

 

7.   Solar Power Technician Specialty:


This is a new Specialty which is being developed. Trainees following this Specialty will join with the CTC course in the 1st term, will combine with the Electrical Equipment Maintenance Specialty in the 2nd term and will follow a bespoke course as a separate group in the 3rd and final term.  Specific course content will be released shortly.
